Class Globe 5.80 Bodo
Class globe 580 Atlantic crossing 2021
I have always been very keen on singlehanded sailing, I used to own an old minitransat 6.5 class boat where I sailed many miles and attempt a crossing on my own during 18/19 winter. Unfortunately never had enough finance and time to really commit for a full racing project. Now days the mini class 6.5 has become very expensive and a bit anachronistic compare to what the fundament of the class were in 1977 when it all started. This is why a true adventurer from Australia called Don McIntyre has created a new mini class called 5.8 class globe, he is the organizer of the current Golden Globe race and the Ocean Globe race 2023, they are two “vintage" race events around the globe, both events had a huge impact on the sailing world because of there very different approach, focusing more on the challenge itself and on the sailing exercise then on technological progress. For Don was very important to keep things simple and accessible.Â
Â
Thanks to the success of these two main events he has then developed a new idea of capable small plywood strictly one design boat, the 5.8 class globe class. https://www.classglobe580.com/Â
Â
The fundament of the 5.8 class are fair and simple, Plywood hull aluminum spars, no exotic fibre. This will make of my yacht a really envirometally friendly boat, I am planning to collect sample of the Ocean water during my sail and have a dedicated diary on the side of my logbook where I can record all the sightings of solid waste I will encounter.Â
Â
The first event scheduled for the class globe 5.8 is a transatlantic crossing from Portugal to Caribbean in 2021, this will be the debut of the class, there are already around 15 boats under construction. I will build the boat during this fall and winter and will be ready to sail in the end of the spring, I will then have all the time to sea trial all the gears and equipment to be ready to race in 2021 fall. I will race to win, the adventurous side of it I have already experience it, this time for me it will be a full on race.Â
